Kleio was one of the nine Mousai (Muses), the goddesses of music, song and dance. Kleio was named Muse of history and is often depicted holding an open scroll or seated beside a chest of books. More interesting in terms of Maròtis depiction is that her name derives from the Greek verb kleô, "to make famous" or "celebrate."
Maróti has painted a strong outline of a head and shoulders with matte black paint. Instead of facial features he has applied thick pink flesh coloured paint to the face which both obscures and defines the portrait. Much like celebrities that we see everyday in the press and social media, their true selves are often hidden behind the mask of fame, Kleio here is also concealed behind a veil of paint.
